How to write a good AI prompt
A beginner-friendly guide to writing prompts that give AI a clear job, useful context, and a better chance of helping.
Quick answer: A good AI prompt tells the AI what you want, who the answer is for, what context matters, what format you need, and what it should avoid.
The simple version
Do not think of a prompt as a magic phrase. Think of it as a clear work request. The more clearly you describe the task, the easier it is for AI to help.
Start with the job, not clever wording
A clear verb gives the model direction: compare, rewrite, explain, summarize, checklist, or find problems. Fancy language without a job still produces vague answers.
Help me with AI.
Explain RAG to a beginner in 5 bullets, with one analogy and one thing to verify.
The four-part prompt starter
Use this structure before you worry about advanced prompt engineering.
- Task: what should AI do?
- Goal: why do you need the answer?
- Audience: who is it for?
- Format and boundaries: length, tone, and what to avoid.
A real example
Instead of “write about prompts,” try: “Explain what makes a good AI prompt to a beginner in 5 bullets, friendly tone, no hype, and ask me one clarifying question if needed.”
Example prompt: “Help me [task]. The goal is [goal]. The audience is [audience]. Keep it [tone/length]. Do not [boundary]. Ask me questions if anything is missing.”What to be careful with
A longer prompt is not automatically better. Add context that changes the answer, not filler that hides a unclear goal.
- Name the task clearly.
- State the audience.
- Request a format.
- Add boundaries.
- Ask for clarifying questions when needed.
A common mistake is writing a poetic prompt with no clear job. AI responds to clarity more than creativity in the ask.
Rewrite one vague prompt using task, goal, audience, format, and one boundary.
Try prompt: “Improve this vague prompt into a clear work request with task, goal, audience, format, and boundaries: [prompt].”One thing to remember
A good prompt is just a clear request with context and boundaries.
